The Other 6 (Day 10)

Reading the Bible // Section 2: The Power of the Word of God The word of God is powerful – if you don’t allow it to mend you, it will, in the end, be the judgment that destroys you. It’s not a book to be taken lightly – it’s life and death. Spending time with God and worshipping Him helps us to be mendable instead of rebelling against God once confronted with our sin. After all, isn't that what we do when someone tells us we're wrong? We get bitter and become convinced that the other person is wrong and perhaps insane. But when we read God's Word, it is never wrong. Being confronted with truth is tricky business because on the one hand is true freedom, but on the other hand, rejecting it will result in us rejecting the truth. Determine ahead of time to be mature enough to be willing to be changed by it instead of destroyed by it. Practical Steps: Spend 15-20 minutes listening to worship music and asking God to keep you humble as you continue to read and understand His wor

Verse 2

They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” Luke 12:53 NIV https://luke.bible/luke-12-53

Verse 1

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 NIV https://hebrews.bible/hebrews-4-12

The Other 6 (Day 9)

Reading the Bible // Section 2: The Power of the Word of God Because the Bible is truth, it divides easily – something is either true or it’s not. It keeps us from justifying our sinful behavior and destructive actions. This is powerful because we are the best at justifying our evil. This process of God’s word cutting away our human desires is often painful, but extremely worthwhile. It's often been said that nothing that is easy is worthwhile. That there is no progress without struggle. That's true of nearly everything in life, and it's true in being changed by God. It hurts. But at the same time, we know we're better off for it. It's like a diet or going to the gym - no one likes it. But we do it because we know it's good for us. Let's ask God to begin to show us where we need to change while also asking Him to help us to be strong as we begin to do the hard work of being changed. Practical Steps: Pray this prayer or a prayer similar to this over yoursel

Verse 2

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5 NIV https://1john.bible/1-john-1-5

The Other 6 (Day 8)

Reading the Bible // Section 2: The Power of the Word of God When we really get God’s Word and it sinks in, we begin to hate those things we were once addicted to. God’s Word is a light – it shows just how dark we once were, because instead of comparing ourselves to those around us, we are forced to compare ourselves to a perfect God who is just. We are the best at lying to ourselves and convincing ourselves that as long as we're better than the next person, then we're a 'good person.' God's Word helps us to realize that there's no such thing as a 'good person' because we're all innately sinful. The only way we can be changed is to admit that we're sinful and ask God's grace to begin to change us as we begin to read and obey His Word. Practical Steps: Read a few proverbs today and ask that God would use that wisdom to expose some lies that the devil may have had you believing.

He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. 2 Peter 3:16 NIV https://2peter.bible/2-peter-3-16

The Other 6 (Day 7)

Reading the Bible // Section 1: How it Got to Us Here in this first verse we find Peter in his epistle speaking about Paul and his writings. Notice how he views them by the wording he uses at the end – he calls Paul’s writings scripture! Even Peter at the time knew how powerful and inspired these writings that were being constructed were – Jesus’ own disciple, who heard Jesus’ very words, says that Paul’s writings are scripture. Even the men who were writing these words at the time understood that something incredibly powerful was happening. They didn't do it to make each other feel good - in fact, Paul actually has to reprimand Peter at one point for not following up his words with his actions towards the Gentiles. They acknowledged that their writings were scripture because God had been personally changing the course of history through their colleagues. In fact, these men wouldn't have even wanted to own up to the fact that their writings were scripture considering the pers

Verse 2

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. Colossians 3:16 NIV https://colossians.bible/colossians-3-16

Verse 1

And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times. Psalms 12:6 NIV https://psalm.bible/psalm-12-6

The Other 6 (Day 6)

Reading the Bible // Section 1: How it Got to Us The Bible is not just a book we read that makes us feel good inside or helps us every once and awhile. Here in Psalms, and throughout the Psalms altogether, authors explain how, to the wise person, God’s word is incredibly precious – more so than silver or gold even. It is life and death; the only thing needed to survive. And yet how many times do we take it for granted, maybe even because it is so accessible. It's astounding that the Bible is the most purchased and owned book in the world, and yet perhaps the least utilized. In other words, it's not enough just to own a Bible or even to read it - it starts to have power in your life when you decide to apply it to your life, even when it gets tough. Do you have what it takes to work hard and obey God's Word even when it causes you to change the way you think and act? It all starts with reading His Word, but it certainly doesn't end there. Practical Steps: Continue, whet

Verse 2

Then Thomas (also known as Didymus ) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” John 11:16 NIV https://john.bible/john-11-16

Verse 1

Then the high priest asked Stephen, “Are these charges true?” To this he replied: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Harran. ‘Leave your country and your people,’ God said, ‘and go to the land I will show you.’ “So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Harran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living. He gave him no inheritance here, not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child. God spoke to him in this way: ‘For four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.’ Then he gave Abraham the cove

The Other 6 (Day 5)

Reading the Bible // Section 1: How it Got to Us This story is incredibly powerful. Stephen is one of the best examples that we find in the Bible of a man who retells the story of God’s chosen people and His redemption across time shortly before being killed. There are countless other stories that we know of that have been passed down from church fathers of people being fileted, hung, stoned, and otherwise brutally murdered for their faith. If these men were willing to endure these things, surely it must be because they had witnessed something incredible and life-changing. If the story of Jesus were just a tale made up by some people who had followed Him before He was crucified, it's hard to believe they would be willing to endure such incredibly painful deaths without admitting it was a farce. The Bible has been sacrificed for by millions of people across thousands of years and still remains the most popular book throughout the world. God's Word is truly amazing. Practical S

Verse 1

The Other 6 (Day 4)

Reading the Bible // Section 1: How it Got to Us If God’s plan was for us to have His word, a written letter to His people to guide them and instruct them, how could that plan go wrong? Job recognizes God’s incredible power here by basically saying – ‘If You want it to happen, it’s going to happen!’ This can be applied to His word – why would He let anyone along the way interfere/mess up His Word when He is all-powerful? This is astonishing in light of the incredible accuracy of the Bible throughout generations, across continents, and now to be found in the hands of nearly anyone today. And to think that He did that all so that we could have His written Word & know the story of His Son Jesus. The Bible is just one of the many practical ways God has shown His love to mankind. Practical Steps: Ask God to increase our faith that He is who He says He is, and He can do anything – including get His word to us, even across 2,000 years, without flaw or error.

Verse 3

In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 1 John 5:3 NIV https://1john.bible/1-john-5-3

Verse 2

“If you love me, keep my commands. John 14:15 NIV https://john.bible/john-14-15

Verse 1

And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 NIV https://1thessalonians.bible/1-thessalonians-2-13

The Other 6 (Day 3)

Reading the Bible // Section 1: How it Got to Us The first portion of this passage follows the theme of this first week of passages: God’s word is reliable because it is from Him. Something to note, however, is the last phrase at the end. Paul explains that the word of God is at work in those who believe – this is a good self-check for us as Christians. If we truly believe God and believe in God, is His word at work in us? In other words, are we doing the things that He says are good for us to do and are we avoiding those things that He says will ultimately be harmful? If we take an honest look at our lives and really our decisions are made based on how we feel, not what God's Word says, we aren't actually living our lives in obedience. Following Jesus takes everything - are you willing to obey God even when it gets difficult? Practical Steps: Repeat this statement before you begin your day today: “Today, with every action, thought, and motive, I will honor You.” Then, check

Verse 1

For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:21 NIV https://2peter.bible/2-peter-1-21

The Other 6 (Day 2)

Reading the Bible // Section 1: How it Got to Us Peter helps to answer that age-old question about the Bible here: ‘did humans write it, or did God literally write it with a pen and paper?’ It explains that, though humans wrote the Bible, their will had nothing to do with the inspiration behind it. In other words, God’s Spirit led them to write what they did, and therefore, we can trust that God would not have led them wrong. After all, if God is all-powerful, why would He allow mere humans to write down things that weren't true of Him and then let them succeed in convincing the world that they were the words of God? On top of that, it's hard to believe that humans simply writing down this 'made up story' of God would have such an incredible accuracy rate across thousands of years: the Bible is the must trustworthy transcript rate in the known world today. Practical Steps: Ask God to strengthen our belief that the Bible was inspired by Him, and because of that, we can

Verse 2

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 NIV https://romans.bible/romans-12-2

Verse 1

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 2 Timothy 3:16 NIV https://2timothy.bible/2-timothy-3-16

New Plan - The Other 6 (Day 1)

Reading the Bible // Section 1: How it Got to Us The statement Paul is making here is powerful. He makes it clear that we can’t simply ‘pick and choose’ which Bible passages are true and which are not – ALL of scripture is useful for teaching and training us to be righteous. Alongside of this idea is the concept that the Bible was written to equip us, not just to be read and forgotten – it has the power to change our lives and gives us the power to change the world! However, if we simply read the words and don't let them change our lives or obey them, it will have a similar effect to reading a phone book. God's Word is meant to be alive and active in our lives: it's incredibly challenging at times, but so worth it. So if you're doing this Bible plan with no real intention of being changed by God's Word, you might as well stop this plan now. But if you're willing to jump in, be changed, and have God begin to use you to change the world, start waking up 20 minut
