Verses from Wednesday night Service

Verses from Wednesday night Service. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. 2 Peter 1:5‭-‬9 NIV

(New Plan) Coronavirus and Christ - Day 1

Come to the Rock Playing the odds is a fragile place to put your hope. Odds like 3 percent versus 10 percent, youth versus old age, compromised health versus no history of disease, rural versus urban, self-isolated versus meeting with friends. Playing the odds provides little hope. It is not a firm place to stand. There is a better way. There is a better place to stand: a Rock of certainty rather than the sand of probabilities. When Cancer Came I recall being told on December 21, 2005, that I had prostate cancer. For the next several weeks, all the talk was about odds. Odds with waiting to see. Odds with medications. Odds with homeopathic procedures. Odds with radical surgery. My wife, Noël, and I took these numbers seriously. But in the evening, we would smile at each other and think,  Our hope is not in the odds. Our hope is in God.   We did  not  mean, “It is 100 percent certain God will heal me, while doctors can only give me odds.” The Rock we are talking about is bette

Day 11 verse

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, Psalms 46:1‭-‬2 NIV https://bible.com/bible/111/psa.46.1-2.NIV

Christ > Corona (Day 11)

Christ > Corona (Day 11) Blessing #10—Teaching Us Who’s Eternal There are three words that have changed my life—GOD is here! I love thinking about the presence of GOD. Not some lame, meh, shrug-your-shoulders higher power (that’s why I left the caps lock on). I’m talking about the GOD who’s better than a cure for Coronavirus, better than a restriction-free world, better than a four-figure stimulus check from the government. As much work as it can be, I try to force my brain to remember that GOD, by his very nature, is better than the best this life has to offer. Even better—that glorious GOD is right here with us in this moment. The Sons of Korah rejoiced and resolved: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, ...” (Psalm 46:1-2) Why don’t we need to fear? Because GOD is an “ever-present help in trouble.” He is forever at our side, always present as we deal with the uncertainties of tomorrow. Could we get sick? Sure. Cou

Day 10 verse

A voice says, “Cry out.” And I said, “What shall I cry?” “All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field.  The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass.  The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” Isaiah 40:6‭-‬8 NIV https://bible.com/bible/111/isa.40.6-8.NIV

Christ > Corona (Day 10)

Christ > Corona (Day 10) Blessing #9—Teaching Us What’s Temporary and What’s Eternal One of the dangers of living in 2020 America is the feeling of invincibility. In other times and places, people expected war to take some of their sons, childbirth to take some of their daughters, and disease to take many of their lives. They knew, way better than we do, that even the most precious blessings of this life are temporary. That’s easy for us to forget in a world of Wi-Fi, fancy coffee, and childhood vaccinations. In fact, before the Coronavirus, we were tempted to think Isaiah was exaggerating when he warned, “All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall,”(Isaiah 40:6-7) Some stuff might be temporary, but surely not “all,” Isaiah! But the last few weeks have turned our staunch objections into humble admissions. Who would have thought that professional sports would ever just stop? That national borders

No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.   “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.  If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.  I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.  My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.  Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.  You are my friends if you do what I command.  I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Christ > Corona (Day 9)

Blessing #8—Teaching Us Gospel Theology Right when the Coronavirus was snowballing into a global pandemic, I was trying to get home. After an abbreviated trip to Israel, I was one Polish layover and an oceanic flight away from home. But guess who was sitting next to me on the plane? A coughing, elderly European. In the pre-Corona world, I wouldn’t have thought twice about her. Her coughs were few and far between. But in a place where the Polish military was scanning our foreheads for fevers, her situation was serious. So serious, in fact, that every time she coughed, I leaned in the opposite direction. I’m not proud of that lean, by the way. I’m guessing it’s not what Jesus would do. In fact, it’s not what Jesus actually did. “A man with leprosy came and knelt before  [Jesus]  and said, ‘Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.’ Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man.” (Matthew 8:2-3) In love, Jesus physically touched a diseased man. In a culture that stayed mo

Christ > Corona (Day 8)

Blessing #7—Teaching Us to Love Church Can you imagine this isolation without modern advances in technology? This week, I watched the live stream of our church’s worship service, complete with multiple cameras, gifted musicians, and a Christ-centered message. Later, I pushed play on my favorite Amazon station (Shane & Shane Hymns Live, FYI) and sang to Jesus with my wife and children. Throughout the day, I texted brothers and sisters in Christ and shared encouragement via Facebook and Instagram. I have a hunch that the Christians who endured the black plague didn’t enjoy a Netflix party with their best friends . . . Yet . . . I am not content. Because I deeply miss being in church. Singing with my wife and daughters through a live stream is nice but nowhere near as glorious as joining hundreds of voices gathered in the same space. Taking sermon notes as I sit on the couch is better than nothing, but it’s not better than sitting in church.  I realize, like you do, that

Day 7 verse

(Sorry didn't put it before) Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 2 Corinthians 9:13 NIV https://2corinthians.bible/2-corinthians-9-13

Christ > Corona (Day 7)

Blessing #6—Teaching Us Generosity I suspect that 2020 will throw us the slowest pitch the Christian church has gotten in a long time. Our prayers for revival might be answered if we swing for the fences. What am I talking about? Money. If the current economic climate gets worse, people’s financial lives are about to fall apart. Jobs will be cut. Income streams will dry up. Businesses will close their doors. The last time I checked, the Dow Jones line graph looked like a rock dropped from the edge of the Grand Canyon. And that could be our opportunity. If we trust our Provider, dig deep, and sacrifice our wants for the sake of their needs, the church’s light could shine more brightly than ever before. The old stereotypes of churches just wanting money will go out the window once the church gives its money to those left wanting.  Paul preached this same message while encouraging the Corinthian Christians to give:  “... others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies

Day 6 verse

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:27 NIV https://james.bible/james-1-27

Christ > Corona (Day 6)

Blessing #5—Teaching Us to See People Once self-isolation became the norm in our neighborhoods, I started to (finally) think of my neighbors. The elderly couple down the road—how are they holding up? The widow who’s all alone—is she coping with the loneliness? The woman from church who was anxious before the virus became our new normal—is she staying strong?  These are good thoughts. Jesus’ brother James reminds us,  “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress ...”  (James 1:27) Real religion isn’t just about church services, home devotions, and generous offerings. It’s about looking after the isolated and ignored. It’s investing our limited time into their lives, making sure they feel seen, known, and loved. After all, this is one of the wonderful things about Jesus. In our distress, he listens to our prayers. In our guilt, he extends his hands and shows us his scars. In our fear, his Spirit brings us

Christ > Corona (Day 4) Blessing #3—Teaching Us Family Discipleship Until the Coronavirus hit, I couldn’t recall a time that my family ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner together for an entire week. Neither could I remember seven straight days of Bible study and worship as a family. But Corona changed that. Thanks, Corona! For decades, pastors and youth leaders have prayed for fathers and mothers to embrace their God-given calling as the primary way that the Holy Spirit would lead the next generation to Jesus. The apostle Paul wrote, “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4) With our crazy-busy schedules, that rarely happens. With another weekend tournament, late nights at the office, and too many social commitments to keep, we hope that a few Sunday sermons and two years of youth group will do the trick for our kids’ faith. Sadly, as history has shown, the trick doesn’t work. Shortcuts don’t cut

Tonights Church verses from the  C'nnection C'mmunity Church. “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.  All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.  He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.   “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.  For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,  I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’   “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?  When di

Day 3 verse

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 1 Timothy 6:17 NIV https://1timothy.bible/1-timothy-6-17

Christ > Corona (Day 3)

Blessing #2: Teaching Us Humility Every time I read the news (which might be a mistake these days), I find another story of a celebrity who tested positive for Coronavirus. Despite their fame, power, wealth, and influence, they couldn’t avoid the heartbreaking news. Apparently, Corona is no respecter of persons. That’s humbling, isn’t it? In one of his final letters, Paul wrote to his friend Timothy:  “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth,”  (1 Timothy 6:17) Money, like most modern smartphone users possess, can make us forget how pathetically vulnerable we are. First world “rich” people (like me and, by global standards, 99% of you) add Instagram followers, build businesses, and raise successful children, quickly thinking we are pretty good at life. Yet all of it can disappear in an instant. And we can’t stop it. This virus has been a humbling reminder that money, beauty, and influence can’t save your life, nor can i

Day 2 verse

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.  Relent, Lord ! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants.  Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. Psalms 90:12‭-‬14 NIV https://bible.com/bible/111/psa.90.12-14.NIV

Christ > Corona (Day 2)

Christ > Corona (Day 2) Blessing #1: Teaching Us Our Mortality Moses once prayed, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12) The daily death count in countless headlines is a reminder that we are dying. All of us. Some die sooner, some later. Some pass of more natural causes, others of this ruthless virus. But the fact that corona could infect us and then end us is a message many of us need. Our flu shots and First World health care can make us feel immortal until a virus too small for the eye to see shouts of our frail humanity. We are but dust, as each passing day proves. (Psalm 103:14) No wonder, in the very next verse, Moses cried out: “Relent, Lord! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants.” (Psalm 90:13) Given our mortality, we need God to relent, to hold back every virus and form of violence that would cut our days short. We require his compassion, his kindness, and his mercy, or we won’t make it. One clueless virus carrie

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 NIV https://romans.bible/romans-8-28

Christ > Corona (Day 1)

Christ > Corona If this whole coronavirus seems like a curse, I hear you. Depending on which headline you read, the interruptions, cancellations, and social isolations are far from over, which means so many of the blessings we love might be MIA for months to come. Even after a week of my self-quarantine, I already miss my church, my friends, my family, and my old life (when I didn’t have to tell the Grubhub guy to leave the pizza on the porch).  Do you feel the same way? There’s a silver lining to this corona cloud. After all, we worship a God who has promised that this virus is underneath the complete control of Jesus (Ephesians 1:22) and will be/must be used for the good of God’s church (Romans 8:28). That means even this virus must bow its knee and submit to Jesus. Through humanity’s history, this equation has never once been proven wrong:  Christ > ___________.  Joseph (the Old Testament one) couldn’t have known the blessings that would come after his brothers’ bet

Verses from tonights Service

“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ “ ‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ “
